At the beginning of this class, I genuinely didn’t know too much about beer. I usually only drank IPAs and went about my merry way. My beer culture class has opened my eyes to many different styles of beer! Here are some of the beers that we have tried in class.
Left Hand Brewing Company Milk Stout Nitro

This beer absolutely blew my socks off! It was so delicious and creamy, yet it has such a dark color. My teacher, Professor Brown, had warned us that just because the color is dark, that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be heavy. Left Hand Brewing changed my opinion of dark beer. This milk stout was like drinking a cold glass of chocolate milk. By the time my sample glass was empty, I was ready for more. Another thing that I want to mention is that this was my first EVER milk stout. Needless to say, my life has been forever changed. Fun fact: a stout can be a porter, but a porter can never be a stout
This beer has an ABV of 6% and an IBU of 25.
Scofflaw Basement IPA

Do I know what a scofflaw is? Before this class, this was my favorite beer by far. The weekend before we had this beer in class, I visited Scofflaw’s brewery in west midtown, Atlanta. It has a heavy aroma of hops, naturally, and the esters are very present, leaning towards grapefruit. While visiting this brewery, I also had the fortune of trying their passionfruit, orange, & guava version of this beer. Back to the question of do I know what a scofflaw is? Absolutely not! But heck, I’m still going to drink this beer.
This beer has an ABV of 7.5% (You read that correctly) and an IBU of 40.
Second Self Thai Wheat

Second Self's Thai Wheat beer was extremely refreshing. It was one of the first tastings we had in class. It is an American Wheat Ale with a heavy taste of lemongrass and ginger aftertaste. The can decoration is extremely fun and actually came in third place for best can packaging by tastings.com. This beer has an IBU of 18 and an ABV of 5.1%.
Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat

Forget what you think about Blue Moon. This summer honey wheat is a seasonal beer for Blue Moon and was outstanding. It was so refreshing and tasty that three of us in the class went out and bought it immediately after. It is brewed with Chinook hops and is a wheat ale. Despite the fancy name, it’s literally blue moon with honey added to it, however, a little honey goes a long way. If you’re hanging by the pool this summer, you’ll want one of these.
ABV: 5.2%
IBU: 15
